What is Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)?
Ortho-K is a non-surgical treatment that gently reshapes the surface of your eye using specially designed rigid contact lenses worn overnight. In the morning, the lenses are removed, and you can enjoy clear vision throughout the day without glasses or daytime contact lenses.
Ortho-K is primarily used to correct myopia (short-sightedness), and in many cases, it can help slow the progression of myopia in children and teenagers. It’s also a great option for active adults who want freedom from glasses or contacts during the day.
How Does It Work?
While you sleep, Ortho-K lenses apply gentle pressure to the cornea to temporarily reshape its curvature. This change alters how light enters your eye, bringing images into clearer focus. The effect is reversible. If you stop wearing the lenses, your vision will gradually return to its original state.
Who Is Ortho-K For?
- Children and teens with progressing myopia
- Adults who are not suitable for or do not want laser eye surgery
- People with active lifestyles who prefer not to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day
We assess your suitability with a detailed eye examination and corneal topography scan.
Caring for Your Ortho-K Lenses
Proper hygiene and care are essential to keep your eyes healthy and your vision clear. Here’s a basic guide:
Daily Cleaning with AOSept Solution
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, then dry them with a lint-free towel.
- Remove one lens at a time and rinse it with preservative-free saline if there is visible debris.
- Place each lens in its designated basket in the AOSept lens case.
- Fill the case with AOSept solution up to the marked line. Do not overfill or underfill.
- Close the case tightly and leave it upright for at least 6 hours (or overnight) to allow the solution to neutralise completely.
⚠️ Never put AOSept directly into your eye or use it for rinsing lenses before insertion. It must be fully neutralised in the AOSept case before lenses are worn.
In the Morning
- After at least 6 hours of soaking, remove your lenses from the case.
- Optionally, you can rinse the lenses with preservative-free saline before inserting them.
- Insert your lenses using clean, dry hands.
Important tips:
- Do not use tap water to rinse or store lenses.
- Discard used AOSept solution daily — never reuse it.
- Stick to the care instructions provided during your fitting and follow up as advised.
Progent Cleaning Instructions
Use Progent once a month (or as advised) for a deep clean to remove protein buildup.
Steps:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Place your lenses in the Progent lens case baskets (R and L sides).
- Open one Progent A vial and one Progent B vial. Pour both into the case.
- Soak lenses for 30 minutes only. ⚠️ Do not exceed 30 minutes — Progent is strong and can damage lenses if left too long.
- After 30 minutes, discard the solution and rinse lenses and case thoroughly with preservative-free saline.
- Clean and soak your lenses as usual in your contact lens solution before next use.
