What are cataracts?
Cataracts occur when the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy. This can cause vision to become blurry, hazy or dull, and may make it harder to see clearly, especially at night or in bright glare.
What causes cataracts?
Cataracts are most commonly caused by natural changes in the eye as we age, but they can also develop due to eye injury, certain health conditions, some medications, or long-term UV exposure. An eye test can help detect cataracts and monitor any changes in your vision over time.
How are cataracts treated?
In the early stages, cataracts may simply be monitored during your regular eye tests. Updated glasses, better lighting or changes to your prescription may help improve your vision for a period of time. If cataracts start to affect your everyday activities, such as reading, driving, recognising faces or seeing clearly at night, your optometrist may refer you to an ophthalmologist for further assessment.
