A comprehensive eye test is a detailed assessment of your eyesight and eye health, designed to identify vision problems and detect early signs of eye conditions. It goes beyond simply checking how well you can see, providing a full evaluation of how your eyes function and their overall health. During a comprehensive eye test, we assess your vision clarity, focusing ability, eye coordination, and examine the health of your eyes using advanced diagnostic technology. This allows us to detect conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other eye health concerns early – often before symptoms appear. Comprehensive eye tests are recommended for patients of all ages and are available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations. It is recommended you make an appointment for your comprehensive eye test to avoid long wait times however we can also accommodate walk-ins at our Ringwood and Croydon locations

What Does a Comprehensive Eye test Involve?

A comprehensive eye test involves a series of thorough, non-invasive assessments to evaluate both your vision and eye health. We check your visual acuity, determine your prescription, assess how your eyes focus and work together, and examine the internal and external health of your eyes. Depending on your needs, we may also use advanced imaging such as retinal imaging or OCT scans to gain a detailed view of your eye structures. These tests allow us to detect potential issues early and provide the most accurate diagnosis.

Does it hurt or feel uncomfortable?

A comprehensive eye test is completely non-invasive and painless. Some tests may involve bright lights or eye drops, but most patients find the process comfortable and straightforward.

Do I need to prepare?

No special preparation is needed. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it’s helpful to bring them along to your appointment. If eye drops are used during your test, your vision may be slightly blurred afterwards, so you may prefer not to drive immediately.

What does a comprehensive eye test cost?

For eligible patients, a comprehensive eye test is typically bulk billed through Medicare. If additional or specialised testing is required, there may be an extra fee, which will always be explained before proceeding.

What happens after the test?

After your comprehensive eye test, your optometrist will explain your results and discuss your vision and eye health in detail. If everything is normal, you’ll be advised when to return for your next check. If any issues are identified, we’ll recommend the most suitable next steps, which may include glasses, contact lenses, treatment, or further monitoring. You’ll receive your results immediately, along with clear guidance on how to maintain your eye health moving forward.

You do not need a referral from a doctor for a comprehensive eye test. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
You should allow 30-45 minutes for your comprehensive eye test
Most people should have a comprehensive eye test every 2 years, even if their vision seems fine. Regular eye tests help check your prescription and allow your optometrist to monitor the overall health of your eyes. You may need to come in more often if you wear glasses or contact lenses, are over 65, have diabetes, have a family history of eye disease, or notice any changes in your vision.
To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking an appointment in advance. Walk-ins may be available at our Ringwood and Croydon locations, depending on appointment availability on the day.

If you have not visited us before, fill out our New Patient Form before your appointment. Alternatively complete this in-person prior to your appointment.

Attend your eye check appointment. 
Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation, followed by a series of thorough, painless eye tests tailored to you.

4. Results & Treatment

In most cases you will receive your results immediately.
In your appointment your optometrist will assess your results and provide the findings and recommended next actions if required.
