Dry, irritated or watery eyes? A dry eye test can help identify the cause

Dry Eye test

A dry eye test is designed to identify the cause of dry, irritated, or watery eyes and assess the overall health of your tear film. Using advanced technology, we evaluate how well your eyes produce and maintain tears, allowing us to detect dry eye disease early and recommend the most effective treatment. If you’re experiencing discomfort, blurred vision, or eye fatigue, a dry eye test can help restore long-lasting comfort and clarity.

Pinpointing the cause of your dry eyes

What is a Dry Eye Test?

A dry eye test is a thorough assessment used to diagnose dry eye disease and determine what’s causing your symptoms. During the test, we examine your tear quality, tear production, and the health of your tear glands using specialised imaging and non-invasive techniques. Dry eye can be caused by factors such as screen use, ageing, environmental conditions, or blocked tear glands, and often develops without obvious warning signs. Identifying the cause early allows for more effective treatment and long-term management. Dry eye tests are available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations. It is recommended you make an appointment for your dry eye test to avoid long wait times however we can also accommodate walk-ins at our Ringwood and Croydon locations

What Does a Dry Eye check Involve?

A dry eye test involves a series of gentle, non-invasive assessments to evaluate how well your eyes produce and maintain tears. We may assess your tear film stability, measure tear production, and use advanced imaging such as meibography to examine your tear glands. These tests help us identify whether your dry eye is caused by poor tear quality, reduced tear production, or gland dysfunction—allowing us to create a targeted treatment plan.

Does a dry eye check hurt or feel uncomfortable?

A dry eye test is completely non-invasive and painless. Some tests may involve bright lights or gentle drops, but most patients find the process quick and comfortable.

Do I need to prepare for a dry eye check?

No special preparation is needed for a dry eye test. If you wear contact lenses, you may be asked to remove them before your appointment. It can also be helpful to bring any current eye drops or medications you’re using.

What does a Dry eye check cost?

For eligible patients, a dry eye test may be partially or fully covered by Medicare. Some specialised dry eye assessments or advanced imaging may incur an additional fee, which will be explained before proceeding.

What happens after the test?

After your dry eye test, your optometrist will explain the results and identify the underlying cause of your symptoms. If dry eye disease is diagnosed, we’ll recommend a personalised treatment plan which may include eye drops, eyelid care, lifestyle adjustments, or advanced treatments such as IPL therapy. You’ll receive your results immediately, and follow-up appointments may be recommended to monitor your progress and ensure your treatment is effective.
