What is a Glaucoma Test?

A glaucoma test is used to detect and monitor glaucoma, a condition that can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss if left untreated. Often referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma typically develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. During a glaucoma test, we assess multiple aspects of your eye health, including eye pressure, optic nerve structure, and visual field. This allows us to detect even subtle changes and begin management early. Regular glaucoma testing is especially important for people over 40, those with a family history of glaucoma, or individuals with certain medical conditions that increase risk. Glaucoma tests are available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations.
It is recommended you make an appointment for your eye test to avoid long wait times however we can also accommodate walk-ins at our Ringwood and Croydon locations

What Does a glaucoma test Involve?

A glaucoma test involves a combination of non-invasive assessments to evaluate your eye health. This may include measuring your eye pressure (tonometry), examining your optic nerve, testing your peripheral vision, and using advanced imaging such as OCT scans or retinal imaging. Together, these tests provide a complete picture of your eye health and help detect early signs of glaucoma.

Does a glaucoma test hurt or feel uncomfortable?

A glaucoma test is generally painless. Some tests may involve a gentle puff of air or eye drops, but most patients find the process quick and comfortable.

Do I need to prepare for a glaucoma test?

No special preparation is needed. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it’s helpful to bring them to your appointment.

What does a Glaucoma test cost?

For eligible patients, a glaucoma test may be covered under Medicare as part of a comprehensive eye exam. If additional or specialised testing is required, there may be an extra fee, which will be discussed before proceeding.

What happens after the test?

After your glaucoma test, your optometrist will explain your results and whether there are any signs of glaucoma or changes in your eye health. If everything is normal, you’ll be advised on when to return for your next check. If any concerns are identified, we’ll discuss the appropriate next steps, which may include monitoring, treatment, or referral to a specialist. Early detection allows for effective management and helps protect your vision long-term.

You do not need a referral from a doctor for a glaucoma test. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
You should allow 30-45 minutes for your appointment
In most cases you will be able to drive immediately after your eye test. However, in some cases dilation drops may be required. If dilation drops are required you will not be able to drive immediately afterwards as they can temporarily blur your vision and increase sensitivity to light. Your vision may remain blurry for 1 to 4 hours after dilation. Your optometrist will advise you before using dilation drops so you can make the appropriate arrangements.
To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking an appointment in advance. Walk-ins may be available at our Ringwood and Croydon locations, depending on appointment availability on the day.

Attend your eye check appointment. 
Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation, followed by a series of thorough, painless eye tests tailored to you.

4. Results & Treatment

In most cases you will receive your results immediately.
In your appointment your optometrist will assess your results and provide the findings and recommended next actions if required.
