What is a hyperopia Test?

A hyperopia eye test is used to detect long-sightedness, a condition where distant objects may be seen more clearly than close ones. This occurs when the eye is slightly shorter than normal, causing light to focus behind the retina. Hyperopia can affect both children and adults and may lead to symptoms such as eye strain, headaches, or difficulty focusing on near tasks like reading. In children, it can sometimes go unnoticed but still impact learning and visual development. Early detection allows us to provide the right correction and support clear, comfortable vision. Hyperopia eye tests are available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations.

What Does a hyperopia test Involve?

A hyperopia eye test involves a series of non-invasive assessments to evaluate your vision and focusing ability. We check your visual clarity, determine your prescription through refraction testing, and assess how your eyes focus and work together. These tests allow us to accurately diagnose long-sightedness and recommend the most suitable correction.

Does a hyperopia test hurt or feel uncomfortable?

A hyperopia eye test is completely painless and comfortable. Some tests may involve lights or lenses, but the process is quick and easy.

Do I need to prepare for a hyperopia test?

No preparation is needed. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it’s helpful to bring them to your appointment.

What does a hyperopia test cost?

For eligible patients, a hyperopia eye test is typically included in a comprehensive eye exam and may be bulk billed through Medicare. Any additional testing will be discussed beforehand.

What happens after the test?

After your hyperopia eye test, your optometrist will explain your results and whether long-sightedness is affecting your vision. If needed, we’ll recommend glasses or contact lenses to improve clarity and reduce strain. You’ll receive your results immediately, and follow-up may be recommended to monitor any changes over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

You do not need a referral from a doctor for a hyperopia test. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
You should allow 30-45 minutes for your appointment
In most cases you will be able to drive immediately after your eye test. However, in some cases dilation drops may be required. If dilation drops are required you will not be able to drive immediately afterwards as they can temporarily blur your vision and increase sensitivity to light. Your vision may remain blurry for 1 to 4 hours after dilation. Your optometrist will advise you before using dilation drops so you can make the appropriate arrangements.
To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking an appointment in advance. Walk-ins may be available at our Ringwood and Croydon locations, depending on appointment availability on the day.

Attend your eye check appointment. 
Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation, followed by a series of thorough, painless eye tests tailored to you.

4. Results & Treatment

In most cases you will receive your results immediately.
In your appointment your optometrist will assess your results and provide the findings and recommended next actions if required.
