What is a Lazy Eye Test?

A lazy eye test is used to detect amblyopia, a condition where one eye does not develop normal vision because the brain favours the other eye. This often develops in childhood and can go unnoticed without proper testing. During a lazy eye test, we assess how each eye sees individually, how the eyes work together, and how well they focus and track objects. Early detection is especially important, as treatment is most effective when started during childhood. Lazy eye testing is recommended for children, particularly if there are signs such as eye turning, squinting, or difficulty focusing. It may also be performed in adults where vision concerns are present. Lazy eye tests are available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations.

What Does a Lazy eye test Involve?

A lazy eye test involves a series of gentle, non-invasive assessments tailored to the patient’s age. We check vision in each eye separately, assess eye alignment, and evaluate how well the eyes work together. For younger children, we use child-friendly charts, pictures, and interactive methods to ensure an accurate and comfortable assessment.

Does a lazy eye test hurt or feel uncomfortable?

A lazy eye test is completely painless and designed to be comfortable, especially for children. The process is gentle, engaging, and adapted to suit each patient.

Do I need to prepare for a lazy eye test?

No preparation is needed. If you currently wear glasses or contact lenses, it’s helpful to bring them along to your appointment.

What does a lazy eye test cost?

For eligible patients, a lazy eye test is typically included as part of a comprehensive eye exam, which may be bulk billed through Medicare. Any additional testing or products will be discussed beforehand.

What happens after the test?

After your lazy eye test, your optometrist will explain the results and whether amblyopia or any vision issues are present. If needed, we’ll recommend the most suitable next steps, which may include glasses, patching therapy, or vision exercises. You’ll receive your results immediately, and follow-up appointments may be recommended to monitor progress and support long-term vision development.

You do not need a referral from a doctor for a lazy eye test. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
You should allow 30-45 minutes for your appointment
Yes, you will be able to drive after your eye test. A lazy eye test does not affect your ability to drive, so you can continue with your day as normal immediately after your appointment.
To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking an appointment in advance. Walk-ins may be available at our Ringwood and Croydon locations, depending on appointment availability on the day.

Attend your eye check appointment. 
Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation, followed by a series of thorough, painless eye tests tailored to you.

4. Results & Treatment

In most cases you will receive your results immediately.
In your appointment your optometrist will assess your results and provide the findings and recommended next actions if required.
