What is a Macula Test?

A macula test focuses on examining the macula – the central area of the retina responsible for clear, detailed vision used for reading, driving, and recognising faces. Changes in the macula can develop gradually and may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Regular macula testing helps detect conditions such as macular degeneration or retinal changes early, allowing for better management and protection of your vision. Macula tests are especially important for patients over 50 or those with a family history of eye disease. Macula testing is available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations.
It is recommended you make an appointment for your eye test to avoid long wait times however we can also accommodate walk-ins at our Ringwood and Croydon locations

What Does a macula test Involve?

A macula test involves examining the central retina using specialised imaging and clinical assessment. This may include visual testing, retinal imaging, or OCT scans to assess the structure of the macula in detail.

Does a macula test hurt or feel uncomfortable?

A macula test is completely painless and non-invasive. In some cases, eye drops may be used to improve visibility of the retina.

Do I need to prepare for a macula test?

No preparation is needed for a macula test

What does a macula test cost?

A macula test is often included in a comprehensive eye exam, which may be covered under Medicare. Additional imaging may incur a small fee which will be discussed with you prior.

What happens after the test?

After your macular test, your optometrist will explain your results immediately. If any changes are detected, further monitoring or referral may be recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

You do not need a referral from a doctor for a macula test. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
For a macula test you should allow 30-45 minutes
In most cases you will be able to drive immediately after your eye test. However, in some cases dilation drops may be required. If dilation drops are required you will not be able to drive immediately afterwards as they can temporarily blur your vision and increase sensitivity to light. Your vision may remain blurry for 1 to 4 hours after dilation. Your optometrist will advise you before using dilation drops so you can make the appropriate arrangements.
To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking an appointment in advance. Walk-ins may be available at our Ringwood and Croydon locations, depending on appointment availability on the day.

3. Attend Appointment

Attend your eye check appointment. 
Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation, followed by a series of thorough, painless eye tests tailored to you.

4. Results & Treatment

In most cases you will receive your results immediately.
In your appointment your optometrist will assess your results and provide the findings and recommended next actions if required.
