What is Pachymetry?

Pachymetry is a diagnostic test that measures the thickness of your cornea – the clear front surface of your eye. Corneal thickness plays an important role in understanding your eye health, particularly when assessing eye pressure and the risk of glaucoma. This test is often used as part of a comprehensive eye exam or glaucoma assessment, helping to provide more accurate results and guide treatment decisions. Pachymetry can also be useful when planning certain treatments or monitoring changes in your eye over time. Pachymetry is suitable for patients undergoing glaucoma testing, those with certain eye conditions, or anyone requiring a more detailed assessment of their eye health. Pachymetry is available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations.
It is recommended you make an appointment for your eye test to avoid long wait times however we can also accommodate walk-ins at our Ringwood and Croydon locations

What Does Pachymetry Involve?

Pachymetry involves measuring the thickness of your cornea using specialised equipment. Depending on the method used, this may involve a quick, gentle contact with the eye or a non-contact scan. The test is fast and provides highly accurate measurements, which are used to better interpret eye pressure readings and assess your overall eye health.

Does Pachymetry hurt or feel uncomfortable?

Pachymetry is generally comfortable and well tolerated. If a contact method is used, numbing drops are applied beforehand to ensure there is no discomfort.

Do I need to prepare for pachymetry?

No preparation is needed for pachymetry. If you wear contact lenses, you may be asked to remove them before the test.

What does Pachymetry cost?

Pachymetry may be included as part of a comprehensive eye exam or glaucoma assessment. If performed as an additional specialised test, there may be a small fee, which will be explained before proceeding.

What happens after the test?

After your pachymetry test, your optometrist will explain your results and what your corneal thickness means for your eye health. These measurements are often used alongside other tests to assess glaucoma risk and guide treatment decisions. You’ll receive your results immediately, and in most cases, no further testing is required unless ongoing monitoring is needed.

You do not need a referral from a doctor for pachymetry. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
You should allow 30-45 minutes for your appointment
Yes, you will be able to drive after your eye test. A corneal thickness test does not affect your ability to drive, so you can continue with your day as normal immediately after your appointment.
To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking an appointment in advance. Walk-ins may be available at our Ringwood and Croydon locations, depending on appointment availability on the day.

3. Attend Appointment

Attend your eye check appointment. 
Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation, followed by a series of thorough, painless eye tests tailored to you.

4. Results & Treatment

In most cases you will receive your results immediately.
In your appointment your optometrist will assess your results and provide the findings and recommended next actions if required.
