Why have a Paediatric eye test?

Paediatric eye tests are recommended for children of all ages, from infants through to teenagers, especially if they show signs like squinting, sitting too close to screens, or difficulty concentrating. Our experienced paediatric optometrists can identify vision issues that may not be obvious, including focusing problems, eye coordination issues, or early short-sightedness. Children don’t always realise they have a vision problem, which is why regular paediatric eye tests are so important. Early diagnosis helps support learning, development, and long-term eye health. Paediatric eye tests are available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations. It is recommended you make an appointment for your paediatric eye test to avoid long wait times however we can also accommodate walk-ins at our Ringwood and Croydon locations

What Does a paediatric Eye check Involve?

A paediatric eye test is a gentle, thorough assessment designed by a paediatric optometrist to evaluate how well your child’s eyes see, focus, and work together. During the appointment, we check vision clarity, eye coordination, focusing ability, and overall eye health. 
We also assess how your child’s eyes track and respond, as well as screen for conditions such as lazy eye, long-sightedness, or early signs of short-sightedness. The process is tailored to your child’s age and comfort, ensuring a relaxed and comfortable experience.

Does a paediatric eye check hurt or feel uncomfortable?

Paediatric eye tests are completely non-invasive and designed to be comfortable and stress-free for children. Your child may be asked to look at pictures, letters, or lights, and some tests involve simple tools to check how their eyes focus and move. In some cases, eye drops may be used to better assess focusing, which can feel slightly unusual or sting briefly, but this is temporary and completely safe.

Do I need to prepare for a paediatric eye check?

No preparation is needed for a paediatric eye test, although please bring along any current glasses your child wears. It’s helpful to let your child know what to expect so they feel comfortable and relaxed. If your child is very young, bringing a favourite toy or snack can also help keep them engaged during the appointment.

What does a Paediatric eye test cost?

For eligible patients, a standard eye test is often bulk billed through Medicare, meaning the consultation itself is free. However, if additional or specialised testing is required, there may be a small fee involved. If your child needs glasses, this will be an additional cost, although private health insurance may provide rebates depending on your level of cover.

What happens after the test?

After the paediatric eye test, your optometrist will explain the results and let you know how your child’s vision is developing. If everything is normal, you’ll simply be advised on when to return for their next check. If any issues are identified, such as the need for glasses, signs of lazy eye, or focusing difficulties, we’ll discuss the best treatment options and next steps. In some cases, follow-up appointments may be recommended to monitor progress and ensure your child’s vision continues to develop properly.

To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking an appointment in advance. Walk-ins may be available at our Ringwood and Croydon locations, depending on appointment availability on the day.

Attend your eye check appointment. 
Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation, followed by a series of thorough, painless eye tests tailored to you.

4. Results & Treatment

In most cases you will receive your results immediately.
In your appointment your optometrist will assess your results and provide the findings and recommended next actions if required.
