What is Retinal imaging?

Retinal imaging is the process of taking high-resolution photos of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels at the back of your eye. These images provide a valuable record of your eye health, allowing us to monitor changes over time and detect early signs of conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and macular degeneration. Retinal imaging is an important part of comprehensive eye care and long-term monitoring. Retinal imaging is available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations.
It is recommended you make an appointment for your eye test to avoid long wait times however we can also accommodate walk-ins at our Ringwood and Croydon locations

What Does Retinal imaging Involve?

Retinal imaging involves taking digital images of your eye using a specialised camera. You’ll be asked to look into the device while the image is captured.

Does retinal imaging hurt or feel uncomfortable?

The test is painless and non-invasive. You may notice a brief flash of light during imaging.
Eye drops may be used in some cases.

Do I need to prepare for retinal imaging?

No preparation is needed for retinal imaging

What does retinal imaging cost?

Retinal imaging may be included as part of a comprehensive eye exam or may involve an additional fee depending on the level of imaging required.

What happens after the test?

Your retinal images will be available and reviewed immediately. Your optometrist will explain the results along with any findings and recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

You do not need a referral from a doctor for retinal imaging. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
you should allow 30-45 minutes for retinal imaging
In most cases you will be able to drive immediately after your eye test. However, in some cases dilation drops may be required. If dilation drops are required you will not be able to drive immediately afterwards as they can temporarily blur your vision and increase sensitivity to light. Your vision may remain blurry for 1 to 4 hours after dilation. Your optometrist will advise you before using dilation drops so you can make the appropriate arrangements.
To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking an appointment in advance. Walk-ins may be available at our Ringwood and Croydon locations, depending on appointment availability on the day.

If you have not visited us before, fill out our New Patient Form before your appointment. Alternatively complete this in-person prior to your appointment.

3. Attend Appointment

Attend your eye check appointment. 
Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation, followed by a series of thorough, painless eye tests tailored to you.

4. Results & Treatment

In most cases you will receive your results immediately.
In your appointment your optometrist will assess your results and provide the findings and recommended next actions if required.
