What is a shortsighted vision Test?

A shortsighted vision test is used to detect near-sightedness (Myopia), a condition where distant objects appear blurry while close vision remains clear. Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long, causing light to focus in front of the retina. It often develops in childhood and may progress over time if not managed. Early detection is important to ensure clear vision and reduce the risk of long-term eye health complications associated with higher levels of myopia. Regular testing allows us to monitor changes and provide the most appropriate vision correction and management options. Shortsighted vision testing is available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations.
It is recommended you make an appointment for your eye test to avoid long wait times however we can also accommodate walk-ins at our Ringwood and Croydon locations

What Does a shortsighted vision test Involve?

A shortsighted vision test involves assessing your distance vision and determining your prescription using refraction testing. We also evaluate how your eyes focus and work together, and may assess eye growth and overall eye health. These tests allow us to accurately diagnose myopia and guide appropriate treatment or management.

Does a shortsighted vision test hurt or feel uncomfortable?

A shortsighted vision test is completely painless and non-invasive. The process is quick and comfortable for patients of all ages.

Do I need to prepare for a shortsighted vision test?

No preparation is needed. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, please bring them along to your appointment.

What does a shortsighted vision test cost?

For eligible patients, a shortsighted vision test is typically included as part of a comprehensive eye exam and may be bulk billed through Medicare. Any additional testing will be discussed beforehand.

What happens after the test?

After your shortsighted vision test, your optometrist will explain your results and whether short-sightedness is present. If needed, we’ll recommend glasses, contact lenses, or myopia management options. You’ll receive your results immediately, and follow-up appointments may be recommended to monitor progression, especially in children.

You do not need a referral from a doctor for a myopia test. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
For a shortsighted vision test you should allow 30-45 minutes
Yes, you will be able to drive after your eye test. A myopia test does not affect your ability to drive, so you can continue with your day as normal immediately after your appointment.
To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking an appointment in advance. Walk-ins may be available at our Ringwood and Croydon locations, depending on appointment availability on the day.

Attend your eye check appointment. 
Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation, followed by a series of thorough, painless eye tests tailored to you.

4. Results & Treatment

In most cases you will receive your results immediately.
In your appointment your optometrist will assess your results and provide the findings and recommended next actions if required.
