This may include people applying for a driver’s licence for the first time, renewing their licence at an older age, or those who have been asked by VicRoads to complete a vision assessment due to a medical condition or changes in eyesight. It may also be required if you’ve had recent eye surgery or a condition that could affect your vision. Ultimately, a VicRoads eye test ensures that your eyesight is safe for driving and helps protect both you and others on the road.

What is a Vicroads Eye Test?

A VicRoads eye test is a vision assessment required to ensure you meet the eyesight standards for driving in Victoria. This test checks that your vision is clear enough for safe driving and may be required when applying for or renewing your licence, or if requested by VicRoads due to a medical condition. Completing a VicRoads eye test helps ensure you can drive safely and confidently, reducing the risk of accidents caused by poor vision. Vicroads eye tests are available at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations. It is recommended you make an appointment for your Vicroads eye test to avoid long wait times however we can also accommodate walk-ins at our Ringwood and Croydon locations

What Does a Vicroads Eye test Involve?

A VicRoads eye test involves assessing your visual acuity (how clearly you can see at a distance) and may also include checks of your peripheral vision and overall eye health. You’ll be asked to read letters on a chart to determine whether your vision meets the required driving standards, either with or without glasses or contact lenses. The test is quick, straightforward, and designed to ensure your vision is safe for driving.

A Vicroads eye check is non-invasive and completely painless.

Do I need to prepare for a Vicroads Eye test?

No special preparation is needed. If you wear glasses or contact lenses for driving, be sure to bring them with you to the appointment. If VicRoads has provided you with any paperwork or forms, it’s important to bring these along as well so we can complete the required documentation.

What does a Vicroads eye test cost?

For eligible patients, a Vicroads eye test is often bulk billed through Medicare, meaning the consultation itself is free. However, if additional or specialised testing is required, there may be a small fee involved.

What happens after the Vicroads eye test?

After the test, your optometrist will let you know whether your vision meets the VicRoads requirements for driving. If you pass, we can complete and submit the necessary documentation so you can proceed with your licence application or renewal. If your vision doesn’t meet the required standard, we’ll discuss options such as updated glasses or further assessment to help improve your vision where possible. In some cases, follow-up testing or review may be recommended to ensure your vision is safe for driving.

Attend your eye check appointment. 
Your appointment will begin with a brief consultation, followed by a series of thorough, painless eye tests tailored to you.

4. Results & Treatment

In most cases you will receive your results immediately.
In your appointment your optometrist will assess your results and provide the findings and recommended next actions if required.
