Treatment to restore balance and improve vision in the weaker eye

Amblyopia Treatment

Amblyopia (or ‘Lazy Eye’) is a condition where one eye does not develop normal vision, usually because the brain favours the other eye. Over time, the weaker eye is used less, which can lead to reduced vision if not treated early. It often develops in childhood and can be caused by factors such as a misalignment of the eyes (turned eye), a difference in prescription between the eyes, or a blockage to clear vision (such as a cataract). Because children may not realise there’s a problem, lazy eye can easily go unnoticed. Early diagnosis and treatment are important, as amblyopia can often be improved, especially in children, through treatments such as glasses, patching, or vision therapy.

Amblyopia Treatment options

Following a comprehensive assessment, we provide personalised amblyopia treatment based on the severity of the condition and the age of the patient. Our lazy eye treatment options include:

  • Prescription glasses to correct vision
  • Patching therapy to strengthen the weaker eye
  • Vision therapy exercises to improve eye coordination
  • Monitoring and ongoing care to track improvement
  • Early intervention strategies for children

Amblyopia treatment is most effective when started early, but can also benefit older children and, in some cases, adults.
Amblyopia treatment is available by appointment at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations.

Symptoms of Amblyopia

Amblyopia can be difficult to detect, especially in young children, as the stronger eye may compensate for the weaker one. Common signs of Amblyopia include:

  • One eye turning in or out
  • Poor depth perception
  • Squinting or closing one eye
  • Head tilting
  • Difficulty focusing or tracking objects
  • Reduced vision in one eye

If you notice any of these signs, early assessment and lazy eye treatment can make a significant difference.

How long does Amblyopia treatment take? and what results can you expect?

The timeline for lazy eye treatment depends on the age of the patient and the severity of the condition. Early treatment typically leads to the best outcomes.

  • Children may show improvement within weeks to months
  • Treatment may continue over several months for best results
  • Consistency with treatment is key to success

With the right approach, lazy eye treatment can significantly improve vision and support long-term visual development.

Frequently Asked Questions

If amblyopia is left untreated, the weaker eye may not develop clear vision properly. Over time, this can lead to long-term or permanent vision problems in the affected eye. Children with untreated amblyopia may also have difficulty with depth perception, eye coordination and everyday visual tasks. Because treatment is usually most effective when started early, it is important to book an eye test if you notice signs such as one eye turning, squinting, closing one eye, or your child having trouble seeing clearly.
Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, is usually caused when one eye does not develop clear vision properly during childhood. This can happen when the brain receives a clearer image from one eye than the other and begins to rely more on the stronger eye. Common causes include an eye turn, a significant difference in prescription between the two eyes, or something blocking clear vision, such as a droopy eyelid or cataract. Because amblyopia can be difficult to notice in young children, regular eye tests are important for early detection and treatment.
You do not need a referral from a doctor for amblyopia treatment. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
No, amblyopia treatment is not painful. Treatment may involve wearing glasses, using an eye patch, eye drops, or other vision exercises recommended by your optometrist. Some children may need time to adjust, especially if they are wearing a patch over their stronger eye, but treatment should not hurt. Your optometrist will explain the recommended treatment plan and help make the process as comfortable and manageable as possible.
Harris Blake & Parsons offers amblyopia treatment at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram practices. Visit our locations page to view open hours and make an appointment.
