Treatment for dry, irritated, or watery eyes

Dry Eye Treatment

Dry eye disease is a common condition where the eyes either don’t produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly, leading to symptoms such as dryness, irritation, redness, blurred vision, watery eyes, and a gritty or burning sensation. At Harris Blake & Parsons, we take a thorough approach to diagnosing dry eye, using advanced testing such as tear film assessment and meibography to evaluate the quality of your tears and the health of your tear glands. Based on your results, we create a personalised treatment plan to improve tear gland function and reduce inflammation. By identifying and treating dry eye early, we can help restore comfort, improve vision, and support your long-term eye health.

Dry Eye Treatment options

Following a dry eye test, we develop a personalised treatment plan based on the underlying cause of your symptoms. Dry eye can result from poor tear quality, blocked glands, or reduced tear production, so treatment is tailored specifically to you. Our treatment options for dry eye include:

  • Lubricating eye drops for symptom relief
  • Warm compress therapy to improve gland function
  • Eyelid hygiene to reduce inflammation and blockage
  • Lifestyle recommendations to support eye comfort
  • Advanced treatments such as Optimal Power Energy IPL (Ringwood Practice only)

Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eye symptoms can vary from mild irritation to ongoing discomfort and vision changes. In many cases, symptoms may come and go or worsen throughout the day. Common symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Dry, itchy, or irritated eyes
  • Redness or a burning sensation
  • Watery eyes (a common response to dryness)
  • Blurred or fluctuating vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Gritty or sandy feeling in the eyes
  • Eye fatigue, especially after screen use

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, a dry eye test can help identify the cause and enable us to provide effective treatment for you.

How long does Dry eye treatment take? And what results can you expect?

Dry eye treatment timelines vary depending on the severity and underlying cause of your condition. Many patients begin to notice relief within a few days of starting treatment, particularly when using the right combination of therapies.

  • Mild cases may improve within days to weeks
  • Ongoing or chronic dry eye may require long-term management
  • Advanced treatments such as IPL can provide more significant, lasting improvement

With consistent care and follow-up, dry eye symptoms can be effectively managed, helping restore comfort, improve vision, and support long-term eye health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dry eye can happen when your eyes do not produce enough tears, or when your tears evaporate too quickly. This affects the tear film that keeps the surface of your eyes comfortable, protected and well lubricated. Common causes and contributing factors include ageing, prolonged screen use, contact lens wear, dry or windy environments, air conditioning, some medications and certain health conditions. Because dry eye can have different causes, your optometrist can assess your eyes and recommend the most suitable treatment for your symptoms.
You do not need a referral from a doctor for dry eye treatment. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
Dry eye treatment is usually not painful. Depending on what is causing your symptoms, treatment may involve lubricating eye drops, warm compresses, eyelid cleaning, or in-clinic dry eye treatments recommended by your optometrist. Some treatments may feel warm, unusual or slightly uncomfortable at first, but they should not be painful. Your optometrist will explain the process before starting and make sure your treatment is as comfortable as possible.
Dry eye treatment is available at all 4 of our locations, however if Optimal Power Energy IPL is recommended as part of your dry eye treatment plan, this treatment is available at our Ringwood practice only.
The cost of dry eye treatment depends on the type of treatment recommended, the severity of your symptoms and whether ongoing care is needed. After assessing your eyes, your optometrist will explain the most suitable treatment options and provide a clear breakdown of any costs before treatment begins.
