Early treatment to slow the progression of myopia

Myopia (short sightedness) Treatment

Myopia treatment is designed to slow the progression of short-sightedness and protect long-term eye health. With advanced solutions and personalised care, we help manage myopia in both children and adults to support clearer vision now and in the future.

Myopia Treatment options

Following a comprehensive assessment, we provide personalised myopia treatment based on your age, prescription, and rate of progression. Myopia (short-sightedness) occurs when the eye grows too long, causing distant objects to appear blurry. Our myopia treatment options include:

  • Miyosmart lenses – specially designed spectacle lenses that help slow myopia progression in children by controlling how light focuses on the retina
  • Ortho-K (orthokeratology) – overnight contact lenses that gently reshape the eye to provide clear daytime vision while also helping manage myopia progression
  • Prescription glasses or contact lenses for clear, comfortable vision
  • Ongoing monitoring to track changes and adjust treatment as needed

Myopia treatment is most effective when started early, particularly in children, to help reduce long-term risks associated with high myopia.
Myopia treatment is available by appointment at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram locations.

Symptoms of Myopia

Myopia often develops in childhood and may progress over time if not managed. Common signs of myopia include:

  • Blurred distance vision
  • Squinting to see clearly
  • Sitting close to screens or the TV
  • Difficulty seeing the board at school
  • Frequent changes in glasses prescription

If you notice any of these symptoms, early myopia treatment can help slow progression and protect long-term eye health.

How long does Myopia treatment take? and what results can you expect?

Myopia treatment is an ongoing process focused on slowing progression rather than reversing it.

  • Treatment is typically long-term, especially for children
  • Early intervention provides the best results
  • Regular monitoring helps track changes and adjust treatment
  • Slowing myopia progression can reduce the risk of future eye health issues

With consistent care, myopia treatment can significantly reduce the progression of short-sightedness and support better long-term outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

If myopia is left untreated, distance vision can become increasingly blurry, making everyday tasks such as reading the board at school, driving, watching TV or recognising faces from a distance more difficult. In children, untreated myopia may continue to progress over time. Higher levels of myopia can also increase the risk of more serious eye health problems later in life, which is why early diagnosis, regular eye tests and myopia management are important.
Myopia, or short-sightedness, is usually caused by the eye growing slightly too long from front to back. This means light focuses in front of the retina instead of directly on it, making objects in the distance appear blurry. Myopia can run in families, but it can also be influenced by lifestyle and environmental factors, especially during childhood. Spending long periods doing close-up tasks, such as reading or screen use, and not spending enough time outdoors may increase the risk of myopia developing or progressing.
You do not need a referral from a doctor for myopia treatment. Simply book online or call your preferred Harris Blake and Parsons practice to make an appointment.
Myopia treatment costs can vary depending on the type of treatment recommended. This may include specialised glasses, contact lenses, Ortho-K lenses or other myopia management options. Your optometrist will assess your child’s eyes, prescription and risk of progression before recommending the most suitable option. You will be given a clear explanation of the treatment plan and costs before starting treatment.
Harris Blake & Parsons offers myopia treatment at our Ringwood, Croydon, Healesville and Yarram practices. Visit our locations page to view open hours and make an appointment.
